Kathryn H. Hug

Hometown: Sapulpa, Oklahoma

Education: BA, Journalism; MA, PHD, English

Career: Retired Educator—Teacher, Administrator, Consultant—PreK through College

Library Background: My elementary school teachers allowed me to take charge of their room libraries.  From then on, I have found ways to be connected with libraries—a part-time reference job in college, a library mother at my children’s elementary school, and a lifelong patron of public libraries.  Among my fondest memories of my doctoral studies are the hours spent in the stacks at New York Public Library and Columbia University.

Community Service: I have been a volunteer since childhood and consider community service essential to my well-being.  In Henderson, I have volunteered on St. Rose Hospital’s Siena campus, and I have assisted the Henderson Community Foundation.  As a member of the Sun City Anthem Book Club, I have served as president and helped design and organize the SCA Library.  Currently, my volunteer work is concentrated on supporting the Henderson Libraries through Friends of Henderson Libraries.

Points of Pride: Kathryn H. Hug Writing Award, given annually to a Cedar Shoals (Athens, GA) High School senior;  Kathryn H. Hug Instructional Leadership Award, given annually to a Clarke County (GA) School District educator; 2006 recipient of the Henderson Libraries Salvatore La Magra Service Award

Paula W. Petruso

Hometown: Glendale, California

Education:  UNLV/AMA Certified Manager, UNLV Certified Customer Service Manager, my education continues.

Career: Social Welfare Manager, Nevada State Welfare Division, retired 2004

Library Background: My earliest memories are snuggling in bed with my brother while Mom read our bedtime story from Uncle Wiggily. Both my parents were readers and I grew up amongst piles of books.  We had many homes; my Dad was a U.S. Marine.  Where ever we lived, we used the library and bookmobile.

Community Service:  I was taught as a child to share and give to those less fortunate, to believe that people are more important than the things we own.  I followed my parents into public service. I learned that the ease with which opportunities came my way was not a universal experience.

Points of Pride:  I’m the proud mother of three self-supporting children.  I have used my knowledge, skills and abilities to help others and will continue to do so.
